The Mahim Causeway was previously the only link between Mumbai’s central suburbs, major business centre, and western suburbs. The fact that it was the sole route connecting Mumbai’s two commercial districts added to commuters’ woes during peak hours, when getting from one end to the other took at least 70-90 minutes. The development of a sea link has been planned to alleviate the discomfort caused by traffic congestion at Mahim Causeway.
The proposed bridge would link Bandra and Worli, cutting travel time from 60 to 90 minutes to just ten minutes. The Bandra Worli Sea Link, which would serve as an alternative to the Mahim Causeway, was proposed to be built over the Mahim Bay.
